Dutch Visual Treat Sat, 16 Feb 2019 22:26:39 +0000 Where: Amsterdam, Netherlands

On this trip to Amsterdam I opted for the NDSM vs the canals.

Not Sure Why Sat, 26 Jan 2019 15:35:03 +0000 Where: Lisbon, Portugal

I’m headed to Europe to speak at a trade show which reminded me of this image I captured two years ago before the same trade show.

These women are in a taxi and I kinda liked the soft diffused look due to shooting through the windscreen.

So I kinda like this but for some reason others tell me they love this image, and I don’t know why. It could be the animated genuine people, it could be the diffusion or it could just be something that cannot be analyzed and simply enjoyed.

Seeing Red Sat, 20 Oct 2018 20:57:55 +0000 Where: Philadelphia, PA

While its well known that all colours can be produced with RGB (Red, Green and Blue), I’m often drawn to scenes where the predominant colours are only RGB.

What makes this picture more interesting for the photographer is that little extra R in the shoes. But if one is a colour scientist, it’s the white soles that makes things more interesting because R+G+B=W.

Muscle Memory Mon, 01 Oct 2018 02:21:36 +0000 Where: Venice Beach, CA

Found myself with a free Sunday afternoon while in LA.

Did my usual web search for “What’s Happening in Wherever I Am.”

Turns out it was the last day of the LA County Fair and I set the GPS for Pomona.

I remember going to the LA County Fair with the Reseda High Photo Club (I’m holding the “U” in the picture below) but that fond memory quickly gave way to modern day LA traffic. With Pomona almost two hours away I headed West instead of East to my favorite high school location to make pictures, Venice Beach.

Doesn’t look like that Muscle Beach sign has changed from my first photograph of it 40 years ago.

Hot Foot Thu, 02 Aug 2018 17:20:26 +0000 Where: Bangkok, Thailand

I wonder if the person selling these peppers had to dip his foot in cold water.

Striped Sat, 14 Jul 2018 16:24:51 +0000 Where: Bangkok, Thailand

Sometimes people sit in just the right place.

Keep the Dime or Baht Sat, 07 Jul 2018 12:51:56 +0000 Where: Bangkok, Thailand

Public phones like the British Telephone Box are disappearing around the world.

In this case, overgrown.

Fly By Mon, 21 May 2018 17:11:03 +0000 Where: Yangon Myanmar

I have been in incredibly boring meetings this week in Los Angeles which reminded me of this image.

I yearn for a fly, like the one on this woman’s forehead, to land on my head and give me something to do during my current meetings.

Cool Smoke Fri, 02 Mar 2018 23:55:43 +0000 Where: Dublin, Ireland

A cold smoker at multiple intersections

Irish Haiku Sat, 24 Feb 2018 14:43:42 +0000 Dublin, Ireland

Cold Day in Dublin

Irish Green Sun, 18 Feb 2018 23:41:46 +0000 Where: Dublin, Ireland

While walking the streets of Dublin I followed a man making deliveries who was wearing green.

It was Ireland after all.

From a distance I waited until the composition was just right.

Table That Sat, 27 Jan 2018 03:54:15 +0000 Where: Bangkok, Thailand

While the dining table might be different, I was pleased to see that Thai food in Bangkok looks like Thai food in North America.

Yellow Bias Sun, 07 Jan 2018 16:09:19 +0000 Where: Bangkok, Thailand

Some say I’m drawn to yellows due to my years at Kodak.

Not sure there is a connection to the former Great Yellow Father, but when I saw yellow flowers and monks in yellow I went on auto-pilot.

Helmets??? Mon, 01 Jan 2018 22:35:45 +0000 Where: Bangkok, Thailand

Typical family transportation in Bangkok.

Pretty Good Wed, 29 Nov 2017 02:28:54 +0000 Where: Philadelphia, PA

I was preparing for a video shoot with Mark Sunderland at Jefferson University. Mark mentioned he liked my blog and when in Philadelphia to check out Graffiti Pier.

In general when people give me recommendations of where to make photographs it’s the opposite of what I’m looking for. I’m often directed to,”The Pretty”.  And of course I find The Pretty, pretty boring.

But Mark works in the Arts and I could tell by his enthusiasm that this was probably a, pretty good recommendation.

Mark gave me other locations to check out in Philadelphia that also sounded, pretty good, but I hung out for 4 hours at Graffiti Pier because it was, pretty awesome.

Family of 4 Sat, 18 Nov 2017 00:46:37 +0000 Where: San Diego, CA

I was at a pre-light for an advertising shoot last week and were on-hold waiting for a delivery.

With some free time I headed to the beach primarily for some fresh air as I am not a sunset kind of photographer. But I used the sunset for a silhouette.

What Smells Worse? Sat, 04 Nov 2017 16:04:24 +0000 Where: Yangon, Myanmar

I love Durian but most describe the smell as old socks in a pile of rotten onions.

This Durian seller is either smoking a stinky cigar to mask the smell of the Durians, or maybe adding to the full olfactory experience.

Arms Race Mon, 09 Oct 2017 00:37:21 +0000 Where: Montreal, Canada

It was unusually warm today.

While walking through Old Montreal I saw 5 waiters struggling to open up a large umbrella for alfresco dining that was put away for the winter.

Standout Sun, 24 Sep 2017 17:28:41 +0000 Where: Yangon, Myanmar

With the recent news from Myanmar I do understand how why there is infighting within this amazing community.

Good Vibrations Fri, 15 Sep 2017 19:30:20 +0000 Where: Chicago, IL

When I spot vibrating color I work the scene for the best composition.

The crooked hat was a bonus.

Hugh Angle Sat, 09 Sep 2017 15:28:18 +0000 Where: Chicago, IL

Before heading back to O’Hare last week I walked past The Bean. I didn’t stop because, well, The Bean is The Bean.

100 yards away in an empty outdoor theater I found a man in an orange shirt sitting in an empty sea of red seats. I didn’t get his name but it just has to be Hugh.

I couldn’t resist the negative space and the monochromatic effect including the shirt which was in the same hue as the seats.

Picasso Girl Thu, 31 Aug 2017 16:36:13 +0000 Where: Chicago, IL

I missed my connection in Chicago yesterday and had 6 hours to kill.

I was about to buckle down in the United Club but light was streaming in through those wonderful sandblasted windows and I couldn’t resist. I headed to the other side of Security and took the L into the City.

With no specific agenda I got off the train in the Loop at Washington, walked up the stairs and saw the Picasso sculpture.

There was the usual cadre of tourists taking pictures and wondering if Picasso was playing a joke on Chicago or not, and then I saw a girl climb on to the statue. The tourists were upset that the girl was disturbing their snapshots, but I knew she could be the real picture.

I captured this image as the girl paused to dismount from the sculpture’s base. Her shadow created a sculpture within a sculpture and maybe that’s what Picasso had originally intended.

Fly By Sun, 27 Aug 2017 22:23:36 +0000 Where: Yangon, Myanmar

I love to eat Rambutans but was struggling trying to photograph them.

Then two subjects flew in to my compositional rescue.

Background Check Thu, 24 Aug 2017 13:33:56 +0000 Where: Lisbon, Portugal

I moved very slowly to frame the black cat in front of the white curtain before they would see me and bolt.
